Security Code (ISPS)

International shipping has been identified as vulnerable to global terrorism. Sound security management practices are considered essential if exposure to loss due to terrorism, piracy and other criminal activity is to be reduced.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) created a working group to develop an appropriate security code for the maritime industry.
In December 2002, the IMO member governments formally adopted various security related amendments to the SOLAS convention of 1974, including the two-part ISPS Code.

Application

It applies to the following types of ships engaged on international voyages:

  • Passenger ships, including HSC (High Speed Crafts)
  • Cargo ships of 500 GT and upwards, including HSC
  • Mobile offshore drilling units
It applies as well to port facilities serving such ships engaged on International Voyages

Schedule

The ISPS Code is entering into force on 1st July 2004, for both ships and port facilities.
